DOWNTOWN SEPARATED BIKE LANES GRAND OPENING & CELEBRATION

I get asked quite often WHY LONG BEACH? Well Saturday's (April 23, 2011) event is yet another reason why I dedicate my professional, social & personal life to this wonderful city. LONG BEACH is a city that is community oriented and truly cares for its residents.

The celebration was attended by all walks of life; this is why I moved here because of the diverse population and knowing I WILL be safe regardless of ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, etc..  Our City of Long Beach featured DJ Mike with the music, a Downtown LB Bicycle Scavenger Hunt, Bike Rodeo for Kids, Guided Bike Tours and Bike Decorating @ East Village Arts Park (150 Elm Ave). The event was supported by many organizations; MOLAA supplied crafts (folklorico style paper flowers, stenciled posters & face painting), Bikestation Long Beach had a table showing support, Cyclone Coaster Vintage Bicycle group was there showing their support as well as our own 103 year old resident Octavio Orduno who asked, "Where's all the beautiful women?"

Charles Gandy, our Mobility Coordinator, MC'd the opening ceremony. Dr. Suja Lowenthal, our Vice Mayor & Councilmember 2nd District, delivered (as usual) a VERY eloquent speech stating that we are becoming "The most bicycle friendly city" in the nation! Robert Garcia, our Downtown Councilmember District 1, spoke briefly thanking everyone (I think he was very anxious and excited to begin the Ride), GO LONG BEACH!!!
